Vulcan 8.1: What Will Be the “Winner” For You?

I have been attending several birthday parties for children over the past few months and one of the things I always find interesting to see is which present will be the “Winner”? By “Winner”, I mean the gift that once the child opens it; they lose interest in everything else to the point that their parents have to “encourage” them to continue opening the other gifts and often end up doing this for them. This is usually the toy that they are still running around hours later while everyone else is chowing down on cake.

Vulcan 8.1 will be the 13th major release of Vulcan that I have been a part of here at Maptek. One of the things I look forward to with each version is what will be the “Winner” for that release for each of our users. I think back to things like the Vulcan Explorer (version 4.0), right-click history (version 6.0) and the expanded layer names (version 7.0) and wonder how I used Vulcan without them. While it is often easy to predict the big things from version to version, it is sometimes the unexpected little things that define the version for some of our users. This can be as simple as a bug fix or an option that took an hour or two to code that will ultimately be the “Winner” for some of our users.

Vulcan 8.1 has just been released and I think there are several changes in there that will change the way we all use Vulcan software. When you get 8.1 and have had a chance to use it, I would love to hear from you on what your “Winner” is. I will tell you my “Winner” and compile a list of yours and post these in a future blog. If past versions are any indications, I am sure the will be a few surprises.
