Maptek founder Dr Bob Johnson has been accepted into the International Mining Technology Hall of Fame in recognition of dedicating his professional life to providing vital services to the global mining industry.
He was delighted to be included in the prestigious group.
‘It certainly is an honour to be acknowledged,’ Bob said.
‘The award really belongs to everyone in Maptek who has contributed to building the world’s greatest mining software packages.’
Bob was a pioneer in the use of computer software for modelling resources in the mid 1970s where he met a need to provide quick turnaround on drafting coal boreholes.

Bob extended that service into a unique solution for the mining industry with his first company Earth Science Computer Services.
He founded Maptek in 1981 to develop mining software that could be operated easily by the geologists and mining engineers.
In 1986, Maptek’s first office overseas opened in Denver, Colorado.
Eight more followed and Maptek offices can now be found in the US, UK, South Africa, Chile, Brazil, Peru and in Australia in Adelaide, Brisbane, Newcastle, Perth and Sydney.
Today, Maptek provides highly regarded software and services across the mining execution value chain.
‘Maptek continues its philosophy of striving always to help our customers achieve their goals by providing tools that improve efficiency, optimise resources and contribute to safe working environments,’ Bob said.
‘We have maintained a substantial investment in innovation of our product offerings to ensure our customers get the maximum reward from their ongoing support of Maptek.’
Bob said Maptek was driven to continually improve its products.
‘We are ever ready to exploit new technology,’ he said.
‘This attitude makes work both a challenge and a pleasure and we will continue to grow the Maptek business and help lead the mining industry into a bright future.’
