The application of point cloud data for the creation of high-resolution terrain maps, has become more common. The tool allows for the safe and accurate quantification or 'mapping' of planar features exposed in a pit wall. The quantitative assessment allows for proper kinematic analysis and the identification of probable slope failure mechanisms. The identification of potential slope failure mechanisms and the propensity for a particular mode of failure enables miners to quantify the hazard and hence manage the risk of slope failure. Recent scanning at rock slopes at the Pilanesberg Platinum mine revealed that the orientation of the wall relative to discontinuity sets may yield incomplete structural data. The mapping of discontinuities can therefore be biased due to the orientation of the slope relative to the discontinuities. This presentation shows how the orientation bias was identified and dealt with to ensure that the structural database was complete and effective in identifying and quantifying the slope stability hazard.

“Bigger isn’t always better”- Alternative mining approaches for narrow vein orebodies

In this presentation we will look at the history and evolution of mining methods applied in narrow orebodies. We will briefly define what we mean by narrow orebodies. As mining technology has evolved so have the methods and approaches to mining. Mechanisation of underground mining led to popularisation of high volume, low cost approaches. This approach does not fit all orebodies and opportunities were lost where selective low volume mining was better suited to the orebody. Economy of scale is not appropriate where the increased volume adds cost but does not contribute to revenue. The use of smaller, narrow vein specific mining equipment and mining methods, which utilise the small dimensions of this equipment allows mechanised mining to be selective and cost effective in narrower orebodies. Similarly in larger orebodies, the selection of the development fleet, and associated excavation dimensions, can have a significant effect on project capital and operating costs. We will consider case studies where a low volume approach has provided the opportunity to significantly change the project metrics and viability. The conclusion is affirmation that the old adage “let the orebody dictate” holds true. An open mind when selecting mining method and mining equipment is imperative, particularly in narrow orebodies and recent developments in mining equipment now provide engineers with more options.

The discovery of bronze introduced an unprecedented era of creative progress that transgressed all international boundaries of antiquity. The Bronze Era was characterised by an expanding cultural universe of opulence, differentiation between the rich and poor, commercial and diplomatic contacts amongst nations and sagas of violence and drama. Access to tin, a relatively scarce metal used in the production of bronze, was a trading priority during that period. The classic Bronze Age was brought to a violent close and a socio-political transformation arose from the ashes of the palatial institutions. In the power vacuum that followed, the Phoenicians took control of the Mediterranean maritime trading networks and established distant colonies. They emerged as a cultural and political force in the Early Iron Age, followed by the Greeks and Romans. Voyages of discovery probed further outwards from the then known world, opening up new long-distance commercial contacts between traders.

Machine learning systems take advantage of the computing power of personal, embedded and cloud systems to rapidly build models of real processes. Developed by Maptek, DomainMCF is based on artificial neural network technology and is used to model the spatial distribution of discrete domain values from sample data. In this presentation we apply DomainMCF to model the spatial distribution of marble quality categorical parameters, such as texture, colour, and density of tectonic features inside the marble volume. Results are combined to produce a final marble quality classification using drillhole and quarry face samples from an operational marble quarry in northeastern Greece, and are compared to results produced by a more conventional estimation method.
