Slope Stability Monitoring

How slope stability monitoring increased safety in an Idaho open pit mine

Slope stability monitoring has become crucial for maintaining safety in open pit mining operations.

When it came to upgrading his slope monitoring system, Mark Chapman, Operations Superintendent at a phosphate mine in Idaho put his trust in Maptek Sentry and it's continuous monitoring capabilities.

Up until that point, Mark's team of surveyors had been shooting prisms once a week. In monitoring terms, there were large gaps in time between measurements and Mark knew that a lot could happen in a week. There had to be a better way of monitoring ground movements and slope stability.

For Mark there were two pieces of functionality that stood out about Sentry:

  • The system could detect movement on the high wall in real time
  • Sentry monitors continuously

Together, they would allow him to react in time to move people and equipment out of harm's way before a slope failure could happen.

So Mark decided to put Sentry to the test.

There’s peace of mind on a Saturday night when you know the guys are at the bottom of the pit and there is somebody watching
